How much do you get for a heat pump in 2026?
Between €6,000 and €12,000 for an existing house, depending on the technology and on what the heat pump replaces. Order between 1 January 2026 and 30 June 2027 and the State adds €2,000. Here is the official Klimabonus 2026 scale for a single-family house:
| Situation | Base grant | Order from 01/01/2026 to 30/06/2027 |
|---|---|---|
| Geothermal, replacing fossil or direct electric heating | €12,000 | €14,000 |
| Geothermal, without replacement | €8,000 | €10,000 |
| Air-to-water, replacing fossil or direct electric heating | €10,000 | €12,000 |
| Air-to-water, without replacement | €6,000 | €8,000 |
| New build, air-to-water or compact unit | €3,000 | €3,000 |

In an apartment building, the grant is calculated per dwelling: €8,000 (€10,000 with the bonus) for air-to-water and €10,000 (€12,000) for geothermal, with a cap per building. Air-to-air heat pumps, in other words reversible air conditioning, are not subsidised.
The word that changes everything: replacement. If your heat pump takes an oil, gas or coal boiler or a direct electric heater out of service, you receive the full amount. Otherwise the State deducts €4,000 in a single-family house.
What are the conditions for the grant?
Four main conditions: a home in Luxembourg that you own, a new heat pump that reaches the minimum efficiency, a professional installation by an established company, and an invoice dated between 1 January 2026 and 31 December 2030.
On the technical side, the 2026 regime sets precise thresholds:
- Efficiency (COP, EN 14511 standard): at least 3.1 for an air-to-water heat pump (A7/W35) and 4.3 for geothermal (B0/W35).
- Flow temperature: 35 °C at most, otherwise the COP must be reached at the chosen temperature. In an older house with radiators, this is the first point to check.
- Hydraulic balancing of the heating network, a dedicated electricity meter and a heat meter.
- Buffer tank of at least 30 litres per kW in an existing building, except for power-modulating pumps.
- Noise: the outdoor unit of an air-to-water pump must stay within 48 dB(A) up to 5 kW, 51 dB(A) up to 12 kW and 55 dB(A) above, or below 40 dB(A) at the boundary of the neighbouring plot.
Since 2026, the old boiler no longer needs a minimum age. Second-hand units and partial repairs remain excluded. A good installer knows these thresholds by heart: it is up to them to choose a compliant model and fill in the certificate of conformity.
Do you need to apply before the works?
No. For a heat pump there is no prior application: you order, you have it installed, then you file the application with the paid invoices. The order date and the invoice date set the amount.
The dates to remember:
- Order between 1 January 2026 and 30 June 2027 for the €2,000 bonus, provided the invoice is issued by 31 December 2028 at the latest.
- Invoice between 1 January 2026 and 31 December 2030 for the 2026 regime, up to 31 December 2035 if the heat pump is part of an energy renovation.
- Filing within 4 years after 31 December of the invoice year. Beyond that, the right is lost.
An important new rule: the company commissioning the heat pump must request the acceptance inspection from the Chambre des Métiers within the following month. Proof of this appointment request is part of the application. Ask your installer for it at commissioning.
What is the procedure, step by step?
Five steps, and the installer handles most of them:
- Compare quotes. Ask for at least two or three detailed offers with the model, the COP, the output and the planned flow temperature. A heat loss calculation avoids an oversized pump.
- Order and have it installed. Keep the order form. The installer commissions the unit, balances the hydraulics and requests the acceptance inspection.
- Gather the documents. Form DEPA-2026, annex POCH-2026, certificate of conformity CCPOCH-2026, detailed and paid invoices with proof of payment, recent bank details (RIB), proof of the acceptance request.
- File on MyGuichet.lu. With LuxTrust or the eID card, in a few minutes. Registered mail remains possible.
- Wait for payment. The administration processes applications in order of arrival. A complete file avoids back-and-forth.
From 1 January 2027, pre-financing arrives: a company listed in the register of intermediary applicants will be able to deduct the grant directly from your invoice. Until then, you advance the amount.
Which aids can be combined with the grant?
Several, and they change the final bill:
- 3% VAT on the complete installation (pump, hydraulics, emitters, labour) for a home at least 20 years old used as the main residence. Benefit capped at €50,000 per home, to be requested, never automatic.
- Klimaprêt: a 1.5% interest subsidy on a climate loan to finance the rest.
- €2,000 extra if you replace an oil boiler in a water protection zone.
- €1,500 for removing, neutralising and recycling the oil tank, on an invoice from a specialised company.
- Up to €2,000 (or 50% of the costs) to adapt the heat distribution system, for example low-temperature radiators.
- Municipal grants: many municipalities add their own grant. Ask yours before ordering.
Combined, these aids can cover more than half of a standard installation. Our subsidies guide details each of them.
How much is left to pay after the grant?
Often less than half of the quote. There is no single price: each installation is priced after a visit and a heat loss calculation. For an existing house, quotes for an air-to-water heat pump frequently fall between €18,000 and €30,000 including VAT, more for geothermal because of the drilling.
An example with a 1990s house heated with oil, ordered in 2026:
| Item | Amount |
|---|---|
| Air-to-water heat pump installed (3% VAT) | €24,000 |
| Klimabonus grant with bonus | - €12,000 |
| Oil tank removal | - €1,500 |
| Municipal grant (example) | - €1,500 |
| Remaining cost | €9,000 |
The grant amounts are those of the 2026 regime; the price and the municipal grant are examples.
Add the heating savings. In a properly insulated house, a well-sized heat pump cuts the bill clearly compared with oil or gas. Our heat pump subsidies page gives the orders of magnitude.
Which mistakes lose the grant?
Three mistakes come up again and again:
- Ordering a non-compliant pump. A COP that is too low, an outdoor unit that is too loud or a 55 °C flow temperature without justification, and the application is refused. Demand the certificate of conformity before signing.
- Forgetting the acceptance inspection. Without proof of the request to the Chambre des Métiers, the file is incomplete.
- Missing the deadlines. Invoice after 31 December 2028 for the bonus, application filed more than 4 years later: the difference runs into thousands of euros.
The remedy is simple: an installer who knows the Klimabonus 2026, a quote that states compliance with the regime in black and white, and an application filed right after the invoice.
Frequently asked questions
What is the maximum heat pump grant in 2026?
€14,000 for a geothermal heat pump replacing fossil heating in a single-family house, ordered between 1 January 2026 and 30 June 2027. For air-to-water, the maximum is €12,000.
Do I have to apply before installing the heat pump?
No. The application is made after the works, on MyGuichet.lu, with the paid invoices, within 4 years after 31 December of the invoice year.
Is the grant paid if I keep my gas boiler as a backup?
The full amount requires the fossil heating to be taken out of service. Without replacement, the grant is reduced by €4,000 in a single-family house. Non-fossil hybrids have their own rules.
Can the grant be combined with 3% VAT and a municipal grant?
Yes. The 3% VAT applies on request to homes at least 20 years old. Many municipalities add their own grant, check with yours.
How long does it take to receive the grant?
The administration processes applications in order of arrival. A complete file, submitted online right after the invoice, is processed faster than an incomplete one that goes back and forth.
